Super Bowl Excitement could spike Hearts Attacks, Doctors Warn

February 27th, 2008

“For rabid fans of the New York Giants and New England Patriots, this Sunday’s Super Bowl won’t be just a game. It may be a health hazard”.

In effect, studies had showed that heart attacks and other cardiac emergencies doubled in Munich, when that nation’s soccer team played in World Cup matches. While history suggests European soccer fans can get a bit more worked up than the average American football fan, doctors think there are some valid warnings to be shared.

But what in the Super Bowl could so much put in danger these sirs? They blamed emotional stress for the hearts problems, but they note also “lack of sleep, overeating, wolfing down junk food, boozing and smoking might have played a role too.”

Personally I did not know that such sports events could engender cardiac problems. I think that it can be possible if the person already has cardiac problems.

“The effect was strongest in people with known heart disease. So on Super Bowl Sunday, such people and others with known risks for heart disease — like high blood pressure or diabetes — should take extra care of themselves, said Dr. Lori Mosca, director of preventive cardiology at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.”

Here are thus the prescriptions of the doctors to avoid it:

Avoid smoking too much, not to drink too much: a glass for a woman, two glasses for a man. (It is well known that a man drinks only two glasses during one big match when he is with his friends!), to have slept well at night which precedes the match and to try not to be too anxious during the match !
